Misting systems provide outdoor cooling through evaporation. Evaporative cooling is a very simple process. Water requires energy to evaporate (600 calories of heat per gram of water, to be exact). As the mist evaporates, the energy exchange results in temperature reductions. The effectiveness of the cooling process improves with higher temperatures or lower humidity.
The low pressure misting systems will use approximately 1/2 gallon of water per hour for each nozzle on the system. For a typical twenty-foot patio system with ten nozzles, you will use five gallons of water for each hour of operation. This is equivalent to running a typical garden hose for only one minute! Portable cooling fans can be used to provide immediate heat-relief. Simply connect a hose, plug in the unit and experience instant temperature reductions. A single pump system can supply multiple fans for large area cooling. With fog systems from some companies starting at $6,000, these products offer an exceptional value. For humidity above 80%, temperature reductions will be as high as 10 degrees.
For humidity levels between 40% and 80%, temperature reductions will be as high as 20
degrees.
